Tomas Malina reaches the national finals of Falling Walls Lab

Tomas Malina from the Materials and Envi Lab at the CEET Nanotechnology Centre, and a member of the REFRESH team, has secured a place in the national finals of the renowned international science communication competition Falling Walls Lab. He delivered a presentation titled Breaking the Wall of Atomic-Level Understanding in Nanomedicine.

Malina’s research examines the safety of nanomaterials and explores how the physical and chemical properties of emerging nanomaterials influence their toxicity to humans and the environment. In the finals, he competed alongside 13 other finalists, each challenged to present groundbreaking scientific ideas that push the frontiers of knowledge within a strict three-minute limit.

“Being a finalist at the Falling Walls Lab was a truly great experience. All the projects were highly inspiring, and I felt honored to be among such a diverse group of young researchers. Giving a pitch talk was an invaluable opportunity—it is a completely different way of presenting science than at traditional conferences. It gave me a new perspective and reinforced how crucial it is to explain even complex issues clearly and accessibly,” said Malina.

Falling Walls Lab in the Czech Republic is organized by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) in cooperation with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Prague, with support from the National Technical Library, CEITEC, Palacky University in Olomouc, and CzechInvest. This year’s national winner, physical chemist Veronika Sedajova from CATRIN at Palacky University, will represent the Czech Republic in the global finals in Berlin in early November.
